Regardless, this last section in the book of Genesis does not include an introductory or concluding toledoth.
There is a possible embedded account in chapter 38 that seems to have no connection to the main story. No markers are used to identify the author of this account either, which, also, suggests literary practices had changed. Or it could be that the author of this account, received the account directly from Judah and not from records he needed to cite.
In addition to the toledoth phrases found in Genesis, we see them elsewhere in the Old Testament Ex. This casts doubt on his colophon theory for many commentators. But a very good explanation for this may be eluding them. As mentioned earlier, Curt Sewell offers the compelling theory that some accounts may have been embedded into larger accounts, making a title necessary for them to indicate where they start. This would seem, also, to explain why other toledoth phrases outside of Genesis appear as titles.
The other books in the Old Testament read as singular accounts. They are not a compilation of smaller accounts like we see in Genesis. They are, rather, large singular accounts. Thus, any outside account added to these, such as the records of a particular clan, would have to be considered embedded, and would need a title to indicate where they begin. The mention of the book of Adam in Genesis 5 seems to preclude any other alternative. I, personally, find his colophon theory compelling. In all but 3 cases in Genesis, toledoth phrases work well as concluding signatures, referring back to preceding accounts.
Ishmael and Esau would be very out of place as major contributors, but if their small accounts were embedded into the larger accounts of their brothers, everything works out perfectly.
The biggest difficulty for me is the missing toledoth at the end of the book of Genesis. It would have made this study a lot easier.

Yes, this is a great point. It also explains why the 2nd account starting in mentions the creation of animals again. I always wondered how the Bible was written in the beginning and the wording on how it was started.
But most — if not all modern conservative theologians teach that God used the personalities and historical circumstances of the authors to reveal what He wanted to say. This is what makes knowing the Biblical languages and background so important. It also explains why the authors differ from each other in writing style and word choices.

God certainly gave direct revelation for some portions of Scripture, such as the Law given to Moses at Sinai.
But the entire Pentateuch was not given at Sinai as many of the events recorded happened after Sinai, and were witnessed by Moses himself, or by sources he knew.
In those cases, God supernaturally inspired Moses to write what God wanted him to write. We see this type of inspiration elsewhere in Scripture through individuals like Luke, who compiled a gospel account using numerous sources. The question is, did God give the histories of Genesis to Moses at Sinai? I agree with Henry Morris on this one.
Furthermore, Moses mentions a source book in Genesis 5. Why in the world would he mention a source book if an angel was his source? I have learned so much in a short time. This seems to humbled me that I have not studied my bible hard enough.

They do not look promising. Joseph turns out to be the younger brother you really, really do not want: a total pain in the butt. His brothers are ready to kill him, but in a last-minute reversal, Judah persuades them to sell him as a slave, since that is more profitable.
Jacob, the cheater, gets cheated again; he mistakes the blood of a goat for the blood of his son. He chooses to wallow in his grief for the rest of his life, refusing to be comforted he makes a choice; Gen. Judah, meanwhile, goes off and wanders on the Canaanite side of life; read Genesis 38 for that ugly story. Jacob has made all this sibling rivalry worse through his blatant favouritism, first toward Joseph, then toward Benjamin.
But God is not done yet. Although the process is long and Joseph pays a high price, he comes out the saviour of his family.
And when he puts his brothers to the test, it turns out they have changed, too. They will not leave Benjamin to himself. Judah, especially, stand out, this time positively Gen. What we get to see in Genesis half the book!
